ABC goodness!

Beetroot, apple and carrot plus a teeny weeny bit of ginger is a potent blood cleansing juice. It’s natural antihistamine for my eczema. It’s of course cheaper to juice it yourself but it can be quite a hassle to do it everyday.. Solution: freeze the dang juice and make popsicles and flavoured ice- cubes with it. Soooo convenient and puuurrrfect for warm afternoons! This is ABC flavoured ice cubes with orange juice.. Yum!

Santouka Ramen

Santouka Ramen at Cuppage is lip-smacking good. I ordered the Curry Gohan with Shoyu Ramen. I must say, this is the best ramen I have eaten so far. It doesn’t take a connoisseur to realise that the cook must have taken a lot of effort preparing the broth that goes with the ramen. The broth is so densely flavoured, it just hits you in the head at the first sip( or should that be slurp!). I’m pretty sure all the goodness from the pork bones has gone into that so-rich-its-almost-creamy broth. THAT, my ladies and gentlemen is the key to the ultimate ramen. The mini portion of curry rice is pretty dang good too. It’s the rice they use, I tell you. Top grade Japanese rice that’s fragrant and glistening. I’m not kidding about the glistening part. The curry has just the right hint of spice. I’m going back for sure. Bonus: the price is super reasonable. 13.50 for Shio and Shoyu ramen. 14.50 for Kara ramen . The set I had was only 17.50!

Leong Sang Hong Kong Pastries

I cannot believe I’ve not tried this all the years I’ve lived in Tiong. This is one of the better egg tarts I’ve tasted. Instead of the usual short crust pastry, the crust is flaky pastry. The buttery savoury crust complements the sweet egg custard. I like the contrast of texture from the flaky crust and the smooth custard. There’s none of the eggy ammonia smell, in case you are wondering. Hmm.. It’ll wash down well with a cup of teh si.. I think I’ll have one… Maybe…

Find these at Blk 18 Jalan Membina #01-06. Opp Tiong Bahru Plaza or 18 Sago Street.

Aromas of India

If you are ever keen to try out Indian food, this is the place to go, no doubt. I have never been a fan of Indian food. I have always found the food too rich, too salty and the smell of spices overwhelming.  The husband and I discovered this place by chance. We were early for service at the church and decided to grab a bite and this place was right opposite Novena Church!

The decor of the restaurant is tasteful. There is no loud music or garish ornaments or harsh white light or the pungent smell of spices.  The food is simply amazing. I like the fact that they serve you a generous serving of Papadum while the chef prepares your order. I like it even more that the Papadum isn’t dripping with oil or stale. It is light and crispy. Served with a minty sauce, it is the perfect entree.

We aren’t big eaters, so most of the time, we will not order the rice dishes. I like the Prawn tikka, butter chicken ( I have no idea how to say this in Hindi, I wouldn’t even try), tandoori chicken, a certain stuffed bell pepper dish and the garlic naan.  Most of the dishes are mildy spicy at most, nothing that will burn your tongue, really. My guess is, the taste of the food is enhanced with spices  and not MSG because the husband, who is particularly sensitive to MSG doesn’t complain of thirst after the meal. Each dish is beautifully cooked, the spices enhance the natural taste of the ingredients without overwhelming it, resulting in amazingly rich flavours.  If you take time to chew your food, you’ll be able to savour  different layers of flavours in one dish.

If you are not in a rush for time, the outdoor area is great for chilling out. How about an ice-cold-beer for the evening?  They have shishas too.!

I am looking forward to my next visit!  :)

Guilt-free dessert: Avocado milkshake with gula melaka

It’s yummy and nowhere as sinful as a cookie and cream milk shake. Blend the milk and avocado ( minus the skin and pit of course) till creamy and serve with gula Melaka syrup. If you do not have a blender, you can mash it up by hand using a good ol’ fork . It’s so good, you’ll never go back to regular milkshake again. Plus, avocado is good for you!
